Book Talk & Review: Library of Doom: Attack of the Paper Bats

As a former English teacher and librarian, book talks were a staple in our founder’s classroom and library. She posted those book talks and reviews on her personal page, educatorbarnes.com. Those reviews are now on this website, and our founder will continue adding new book reviews. They are categorized on the Book Talks and Reviews page.

The Library of Doom is a series written by Michael Dahl. The series can be read in any order. I just finished reading Attack of the Paper Bats.

I purchased the 10th anniversary edition of the series years ago for my twin sons. They love mystery and scary stories. This series focuses on a librarian who watches over a hidden library of dangerous books. The librarian’s job is to prevent the books from falling into the wrong hands.

This book begins with a boy buying a book from a store, but somehow the book falls out of the boy’s bag. Once out of the bag, the pages morph into paper bats who can cut people with their paper bodies. The Librarian is tasked with stopping this book’s pages from causing havoc.

I also love the back matter of these books. In the back of these books, readers will find fun facts from the Librarian, information about the author and illustrator, a glossary, discussion questions, writing prompts, and extra insight from the author Michael Dahl.

In the back matter of this book, the Librarian reveals the title of this book with the devious pages. I would put it here, but it would spoil information about this book. Once readers read the book, they should look up the title of the book in the stories to understand why that was the title.

Below, I have ranked the books in the series I have read thus far from best to least favorite. Yes, this book is currently my least favorite in the series thus far due to the ending.

  1. Library of Doom: Poison Pages
  2. Library of Doom: The Smashing Scroll
  3. Library of Doom: Beast Beneath the Stairs
  4. Library of Doom: Attack of the Paper Bats
